Want to learn folk tunes by ear but don’t know how? Using Morag’s unique memorisation method, learning by heart is made easy for everyone.

Shetland fiddler Morag Johnston directs an online course teaching a selection of tunes from Ireland, Scotland and the Shetland Isles.  She has developed a unique memorisation method that makes learning tunes by ear approachable for everyone. A qualified pedagogue and professional musician, Morag welcomes musicians from all musical backgrounds and abilities to take part.

Why is this course different from other courses?

Morag’s method is a student-centred approach which is based on Scotland’s oral tradition as well as up to date research on how we learn. Morag’s course aims to make learning as easy, approachable and fun as possible. She is interested in how we can do the least work for the most results. Now in its sixth phase, this course will be in tandem with Morag’s research into memorisation at the University of Aberdeen.

How does the course work?

Each week in class, you will learn a folk tune by ear from Morag using her method. Afterwards you will be given recordings of the tune at different speeds, the tune as part of its’ set as well as the sheet music. By the end of the course, you will know six folk tunes by heart and a Scottish song, too!

Who is Morag?

Morag Johnston is a Shetland fiddler and classical-trained violinist who performs internationally. She is a qualified teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience.
